Three-Day Fast: A Journey to Overcoming Gluttony and Restoring the Temple

By: Esther | Inspired by the Holy Spirit

Dates: 22–24 June 2025

Introduction

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?”

—1 Corinthians 6:19 (ESV)

The body keeps score. It remembers habits, appetites, indulgences, and even pain. But in Christ, we are not subject to the cravings of the flesh. We are called to submit our bodies to God as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Him.

This fast was not simply about abstaining from food. It was about spiritual alignment—casting down the idol of gluttony and yielding to the Holy Spirit. The following is a three-day journey of conviction, resistance, and renewal.

Preparation Before the Fast

  • Pray first: Begin by asking God for strength. Rebuke the spirit of gluttony. Invite the Holy Spirit into the process.
  • Set clear boundaries: This fast was from food until 12:00pm each day for three days. Water only.
  • Know your purpose: This was a fast born out of conviction, not guilt. It was about returning to God with intention and reverence.

“Faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17)

In this case, the work was submission—of the body, mind, and appetite.

Day 1 – Awareness and Conviction

22 June 2025

Scriptures:

  • Mark 8 – Jesus feeds the 4,000 and teaches on the cost of discipleship.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 – “Take every thought captive…”

The day began with a realization: I had been waking up not to pray, but to eat. This subtle pattern revealed a deeper issue—gluttony disguised as routine. I chose to fast until noon and focus on prayer, having already read Mark 8 and taken my medication.

At 11:02am, I gave in and had tea and a biscuit. But there was no condemnation. Just resolve. I knew I could do better tomorrow by God’s grace.

Reflection:

When have you chosen food over fellowship with God? What is your body trying to feed that only the Spirit can satisfy?

Day 2 – Strength and Resistance

23 June 2025

Scriptures:

  • Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
  • Matthew 17:21 – “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

I woke up around 3:00am, prayed, and drank warm water. No lemon, no tea—just quiet obedience. The craving for tea came back later, but I paused, prayed, and worshipped instead.

That morning, I secured a book client and received a $250 payment. It was a reminder that fasting doesn’t hinder productivity. In fact, it often clears the mind and realigns priorities.

I had taken a sweet with my medication earlier, which concerned me. But I didn’t let it derail the day. By noon, the fast was still intact, and my focus remained on God.

Reflection:

Are there small compromises that distract you from spiritual goals? How can you move forward without shame, but with grace?

Day 3 – Completion and Victory

24 June 2025

Scriptures:

  • Galatians 5:16 – “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
  • Romans 12:1 – “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice…”

The final day began with clarity. I had a phone appointment and continued with online job training, but I noticed something different—my creativity and energy came not from food or caffeine, but from grace.

At 12:04pm, the fast was complete. I felt release. Something had shifted. I knew gluttony had been exposed and broken. I declared aloud:

“In the name of Jesus, we rebuke and cast out the spirit of gluttony.”

Reflection:

What does walking in the Spirit look like for you? What needs to change in your daily rhythms now that you’ve seen what God can do?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your strength during these three days. Thank You for helping me overcome gluttony and for restoring my body as Your temple.

Let this not be a temporary pause, but a new way of living. May I always seek You first, and worship You with both spirit and body.

Where I am weak, be strong in me. Keep me from idolizing food or any earthly thing.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Practical Fasting Tips

  • Hydration helps. Warm or hot water curbs cravings and supports detox.
  • Avoid milk or tea. Even simple comforts can reignite hunger.
  • Consider medication timing. Stay mindful, especially if sweets are involved.
  • Meditate on Scripture. Let the Word fill the space food usually occupies.
